Gunther Newcombe is currently working with Shetland Island Council (SIC), who are in partnership with OGTC and Highlands and Island Enterprise (HIE) , to develop an energy hub in the Shetland region which has been named the ORION project.
Gunther will share the significant opportunities this project will bring for transitioning the oil and gas sector in the region to net zero, transforming Shetland’s dependency on fossil fuels to renewable energy and developing a green hydrogen industry.
Gunther will describe the renewable energy potential and how this will unlock significant value and sustain and create new employment.
He will also outline the steps necessary to create a robust plan which will attract investment to the region.
Gunther has over 40 years’ experience working in the energy sector spending 35 years working with BP, in areas ranging from exploration right through to decommissioning in several senior leadership positions, followed by five years as Operations Director with the Oil & Gas Authority (OGA), including working on the development of energy hubs.
At the end of 1Q 2020 Gunther stepped down from the OGA and started working on the development of an energy hub project centred around the Shetland region named ORION.
Gunther is married with four children and lives in Aberdeen and was awarded an OBE for his services to the oil & gas industry in the Queens 2021 New Year’s Honours list.
