Martin  Gilbert

Martin Gilbert


Martin Gilbert is Chairman of Aberdeen Standard Investments, the asset management business of Standard Life Aberdeen. He retired from the company on 30 September 2020.

Martin was the Chief Executive of Aberdeen Asset Management, which he co-founded in 1983. Under his leadership, Aberdeen became one of the world’s leading independent asset managers through a combination of organic growth and strategic acquisitions. 

Aberdeen merged with Standard Life in 2017 to form Standard Life Aberdeen. Following the merger, Martin was appointed co-Chief Executive Officer, a role he stepped down from in March 2019. Martin was Vice Chairman of the group from March 2019 until May 2020.

Martin is Chairman of Revolut Limited and of Toscafund. He is also the Senior Independent Director at Glencore plc. In 2011, Martin joined the Board of Sky PLC and in January 2016, he was appointed Deputy Chairman until its acquisition by Comcast in 2018. Between 1995 and 2013, he was Chairman of FirstGroup, having been a director since it was formed in 1989. 

Martin is a member of the International Advisory Board of British American Business. Previously, he was Chairman of the UK Prudential Regulation Authority’s Practitioner Panel as well as a member of the International Advisory Panel of the Monetary Authority of Singapore.

In 2015, Harvard Business Review ranked Martin 22nd out of over 900 in its list of the world’s top performing CEOs.  Martin was named Personality of the Year at the City AM Awards in 2017 and Asset Management CEO of the Year at the Global Investor Awards the following year. He holds honorary degrees from the University of Aberdeen, Robert Gordon University and Heriot-Watt University. Martin is an Adjunct Professor of Finance at Imperial College Business School.

Martin, who was born in Malaysia, earned an MA in accountancy and a LLB in law from the University of Aberdeen. After qualifying as a chartered accountant with Deloitte, he joined the investment department of local law firm Brander & Cruickshank, which went on to become Aberdeen Asset Management.

Mike’s business specialism is commercialisation of new technology and company board leadership processes. In the past 30 years, he has held various technical and commercial positions including CEO of Gas2 Ltd, Commercial Director of Petroleum Engineering Services, and Head of Oil and Gas at Scottish Enterprise. Mike also served as CEO of WellDynamics, a global Halliburton Company, and was one of the founding Directors of Venture Production Company which was listed on LSE and subsequently acquired by Centrica. Mike is part of OGTC's Audit Committee.

Trevor Garlick OBE

Trevor Garlick OBE

Co-Vice-Chairman, Representing Opportunity North East

Trevor is a geologist and petroleum engineer with over 30 years’ experience in the oil and gas industry. He is a Director of Opportunity North East (ONE) and Chairs the ONE Oil & Gas Board, and is involved with several companies and charitable organisations in a variety of sectors. His previous roles have included Managing Director of BP Exploration North Sea from 2010 to 2016 and Country Manager for BP in Norway from 2007 to 2009. Earlier in his career Trevor worked offshore in the Norwegian North Sea and onshore in the Middle East before joining Marathon in 1984. Trevor is part of OGTC's Finance and Audit Committee.

Colette  Cohen OBE

Until her appointment as OGTC’s CEO, Colette was senior vice president for Centrica Energy’s exploration and production business in the UK and Netherlands. She has over 20 years’ experience in the oil and gas industry, spanning a number of technical and managerial roles, in the UK and overseas.

Melfort Campbell OBE

Representing Scottish Government Oil & Gas Industry Leadership Group

Melfort is a highly active member of the Scottish business community. Having served as Chairman of CBI Scotland in 2006, and Chaired the Board of Governors of the Robert Gordon University 2008-10, he holds a number of more recent appointments. These include: Scottish Enterprise Board Member, Chair Oil and Gas Expert Commission, OGTC Board and as visiting Professor at Strathclyde University. He founded his first business in 1985 and continues to invest in entrepreneurial businesses. He is currently a director and investor in a number of businesses in the marine, defence and oil and gas industries. In recognition of his services to industry in Scotland he was awarded the OBE in 2005. Her Majesty appointed Melfort as the Regimental Honorary Colonel in November 2014.

With 20 years’ experience in the oil and gas industry, Mikki is currently the Managing Director of Schlumberger Europe as well as Co-Chair of the Technology Leadership Board.

Jeff Corray

Jeff Corray

Jeff joined Simmons in 2013 bringing with him over 20 years of international oil and gas industry experience, including leading a private equity owned business and significant knowledge in M&A transactions.  

In 1987 Jeff joined KPMG and went on to become Partner, running their oil services M&A business until 2007. Following this he was appointed as CEO of ITS Energy Services, an international provider of drilling equipment and services, a post he held until June 2012. Jeff graduated in Economics from the National University of Malaysia and is a qualified Chartered Accountant. He is also Chair of OGTC's Audit Committee. 

Prof. Paul  de Leeuw

Representing Robert Gordon University

Paul has worked for nearly 30 years in the oil and gas industry, for companies including Shell, Marathon Oil, Amoco, BP, Venture Production and Centrica Energy. He is currently the Director of the Oil and Gas Institute at Robert Gordon University, Chair of the Oil and Gas Innovation Center and a Professor at Robert Gordon University. He is also Vice-Chair of Robert Gordon’s College and a board member of ACSEF (Aberdeen City and Shire Economic Future). Paul is part of OGTC's Audit Committee.

Prof. Karl Leydecker

Representing Aberdeen University

Professor Karl Leydecker took up the role of Senior Vice-Principal in March 2019.  He is responsible for providing direct line management to all Heads of School and ensuring the delivery of ambitious School plans and budgets. He has strategic oversight of the People, Digital and Estates Strategies and also the institutional strategic planning processes, including the Outcome Agreement with the Scottish Funding Council.

Andy brings a wealth of relevant experience, having previously held senior positions within the oil and gas industry, including 20 years with BG Group. Since January 2015, Andy has overseen the establishment of the OGA, setting in place a team with the necessary expertise, capacity and capability to deliver its principal objective of maximising the economic recovery of the UK’s oil and gas resources.

Representing MER UK Supply Chain, Export and Skills Board

Neil joined Expro in 1986 as a field technician, and developed his experience across a range of operational positions within the company’s global portfolio before becoming Vice President of Europe CIS – Expro’s largest region. In 2015, Neil was invited to join the Board of Oil and Gas UK and is also Co-chair of the OGA’s Supply Chain and Exports Board.

Gillian King

Gillian King

Gillian is the Vice President of Europe, Russia, CIS & Sub-Sahara Africa for Tendeka and has worked in the oil and gas industry for almost 20 years. She is passionate about new technology and has been involved in the commercialisation of expandable sand screens, swellable packers and wireless intelligent completions whilst working at Tendeka. A biochemistry graduate from Aberdeen University, she also has a Masters in Oil and Gas (Offshore) Engineering from Robert Gordon University. She is a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers, is on the ICoTA (International Coiled Tubing Association) committee and is an active STEM Ambassador. She graduated from the Future Industry Leaders Program (FILP) in 2018. Gillian is also a member of OGTC's Audit Committee. 

Neil McCulloch

Representing Spirit Energy

Neil is an Executive Vice President with responsibility for Spirit Energy’s Technical and Operated Assets. He is a chartered engineer with more than 25 years’ upstream energy industry experience.

Prior to joining Spirit Energy in 2018, Neil held roles including Chief Operating Officer for EnQuest and SVP of Engineering and Production at OMV in Vienna. He also enjoyed 11 years of asset and functional general management roles at BG Group Plc.

Neil has a degree in Chemical Engineering from Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge University and a Masters with Distinction in Petroleum Engineering from Heriot Watt.

He holds a number of industry assignments including: Member of the Oil & Gas UK (OGUK) Board; non-Executive Director at the OGTC; member of the MER UK Steering Group, with leadership of the Decommissioning Task Force and member of Opportunity North East’s Oil, Gas & Energy Board. Neil is also a Fellow of the Energy Institute.
